Overview:
Yangshuo is considered by many to be the epicenter for active outdoor adventures in southern China. Regarded as one of the seven natural wonders of China because of the Karst formations found there, the skyline of Yangshuo is graced by hundreds upon hundreds of limestone mountains rising up from the forested hillside creating an otherworldly panorama.
The limestone towers provide amazing opportunities for climbing, with routes to satisfy all ability levels. In addition to the Karst formation above ground, there are numerous caves below ground to explore. The region is also crisscrossed with wide soothing rivers that can be navigated by bamboo raft or used to cool off in after hiking up to the impressive Moon Hill, a giant limestone arch. The area is bike friendly and many of the daily activities can be reached by a short cycle.
The region has 1,400 years of history and is home to diverse ethnic minority groups including Hui, Zhuang, Yao and others, who still celebrate various festivals adding exotic flavors to the Yangshuo experience.
Comfortable lodging abounds in Yangshuo. West Street, a pedestrian only cobbled street, is lined with shops, restaurants and bars catering towards Chinese and foreign tourists. One can find all types of Western food, but the best cuisine comes from delicious regional Chinese dishes and local delicacies such as beer fish and mouthwatering locally grown Pomelos (grapefruit). After a satisfying dinner you can wander down West Street to the Li Jiang river and take in the “Impression Liu Sanjie” a famous musical and light show.
Despite being known as an outdoor destination by both Chinese and foreign visitors, Yangshou has remained a relatively small, quiet town where one can find, amazing limestone sport climbing, solitude along a gentle river, handcrafted souvenirs or free wi-fi all in the same afternoon.
